Government Scheme

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Grants of up to £7,500 to replace fossil fuel heating with air source heat pumps or other low-carbon alternatives in England and Wales.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government initiative offering upfront capital grants to help homeowners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel heating systems — such as gas and oil boilers — with low-carbon heat pumps.

Since its launch in 2022, the scheme has been extended and the grant increased to £7,500 for air source heat pumps. BUS is designed to make the switch to renewable heating affordable and accessible, helping the UK meet its net-zero targets while reducing household energy costs.

How It Works

1

Get an EPC

Ensure your property has a valid EPC. If loft or cavity wall insulation is recommended, this should be addressed first.

2

Choose an MCS installer

An MCS-certified installer surveys your home, designs the system, and applies for the grant on your behalf.

3

Grant approved

Ofgem processes the application and confirms the grant. The voucher is valid for 3 months.

4

Installation

The installer fits the heat pump and the £7,500 grant is deducted from your bill. You pay only the remaining balance, if any.
